The Celestron StarSense Explorer 130mm Tabletop Dobsonian is a user-friendly telescope designed to make stargazing more accessible. It uses StarSense sky recognition technology, allowing a smartphone to analyse star patterns and determine the telescope’s position in real-time. This feature enables users to quickly locate celestial objects with guided assistance, making it ideal for beginners and experienced observers alike.
Featuring a 130mm parabolic primary mirror and a 650mm focal length, this Newtonian reflector provides bright, detailed views of deep-sky objects. The f/5 focal ratio delivers a wide field of view, helping users locate and track celestial targets with ease. The included 25mm and 10mm Kellner eyepieces provide magnifications of 26x and 65x, with a maximum useful magnification of 307x. The primary and secondary mirrors are made of standard optical glass and feature an aluminum coating with a protective SiO₂ overcoat to enhance light transmission.
The tabletop Dobsonian base provides a stable foundation, allowing smooth manual tracking in both altitude and azimuth. Teflon bearings ensure fluid movement, while an altitude tensioning system enables easy adjustments. The base is compact and lightweight, making it portable for travel. Users can place it on an elevated surface, such as a table or car hood, for a comfortable viewing height. A built-in eyepiece rack offers convenient storage for accessories.
The StarSense Explorer app is compatible with most modern smartphones, including iPhone 6 and later, as well as Android devices running version 7.1.2 or newer. After a simple alignment process, the app generates a list of visible celestial objects and provides on-screen guidance for locating them. The telescope’s optical tube is constructed from durable steel, and the Dobsonian base is made of CARB-compliant particleboard with a melamine finish.
