A Revolutionary German Equatorial Mount
The iOptron GEM45 represents a significant leap forward in the world of astronomical equipment, combining innovative design with cutting-edge technology to deliver a mount that's both powerful and user-friendly. This next-generation German equatorial mount (GEM) is the result of iOptron's extensive experience and continuous innovation in the field of astronomical instrumentation.
Design Philosophy and Construction
Building upon the success of their CEM (Center-Balanced Equatorial Mount) series, iOptron has reimagined the traditional GEM design. The GEM45 showcases a remarkable feat of engineering, achieving an impressive 2.5:1 payload-to-mount weight ratio. This means that despite its compact size and lightweight construction (weighing only 7.9 kg or 17.5 lbs), the GEM45 can comfortably and precisely handle payloads of up to 20 kg (45 lbs).
The mount's construction features high-quality, CNC-machined metal components, finished with a striking red and black anodized coating. This not only gives the mount a professional appearance but also ensures durability and resistance to wear and environmental factors.
Precision and Performance
At the heart of the GEM45's performance is its advanced drive system. The mount utilizes precision stepper motors, known for their accuracy and reliability. These motors, combined with iOptron's proprietary low power consumption technology, ensure that the mount can operate for extended periods without draining your power supply.
The GEM45 boasts an impressively low periodic error of less than ±7 arc seconds, which is crucial for accurate tracking during long-exposure astrophotography. Furthermore, the mount features Permanent Periodic Error Correction (PPEC), allowing it to learn and compensate for any recurring errors in its tracking, resulting in even smoother and more precise performance over time.
Innovative Features
iPolar Electronic Polar Alignment
One of the standout features of the GEM45 is its integrated iPolar electronic polar scope. This innovative system simplifies the often-challenging process of polar alignment, which is critical for accurate tracking and long-exposure photography. The iPolar system uses a camera and advanced software to guide you through the alignment process, even when Polaris (the North Star) is not visible due to obstructions or light pollution.
Quick-Lock Drive Engagement System
The GEM45 introduces a user-friendly quick-lock drive engagement system. Large, easy-to-grip levers allow you to quickly engage or disengage the drive gears, a feature that's particularly appreciated when setting up or adjusting the mount in cold conditions while wearing gloves. The gears themselves are spring-loaded, which helps to minimize backlash and ensure smooth, precise tracking.
Advanced Cable Management
To address the common issue of cable tangling during long observing or imaging sessions, the GEM45 incorporates an internal cable management system. This thoughtful design feature helps to prevent cables from snagging or interfering with the mount's movement, reducing the risk of equipment damage or tracking interruptions.
Versatile Dovetail System
The mount comes equipped with a 6-inch dual dovetail saddle that accommodates both Losmandy and Vixen style dovetail plates. This versatility allows the GEM45 to be compatible with a wide range of telescopes and imaging setups without the need for additional adapters.
Hard Case
Sturdy Aluminium carry case to keep the GEM45 secure
Control and Connectivity
Go2Nova 8407+ Controller
At the helm of the GEM45 is the sophisticated Go2Nova 8407+ hand controller. This advanced system incorporates iOptron's GOTONOVA® GOTO Technology, providing fast and accurate slewing to any of the 212,000+ objects in its extensive database. The controller also features a built-in heater, ensuring reliable operation even in cold conditions.
GPS and Connectivity Options
The GEM45 comes standard with a 32-channel Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver, allowing for quick and accurate time and location data input. For remote operation, the mount includes a USB communication port and an ST-4 compatible autoguiding port. Additionally, with the optional iStarFi adapter, the mount can be controlled wirelessly via Wi-Fi using a smartphone, tablet, or computer.
Tripod and Portability
The GEM45 is paired with iOptron's newly designed LiteRoc 1.75" tripod. This tripod strikes an excellent balance between stability and portability, featuring improved leg locks for secure setup. Despite its robust construction, the tripod remains lightweight, contributing to the overall portability of the system.
Software and Extras
iOptron has partnered with Software Bisque to offer a subsidized version of TheSky Imaging Edition with the GEM45. This powerful planetarium and telescope control software enhances the mount's capabilities, especially for astrophotography enthusiasts.
