The Sensor
While it shares the same pixel size as the ASI462MC, the ASI585MC delivers four times the resolution. Its sensor dimensions measure 11.13mm × 6.26mm with a 12.84mm diagonal, making it ideal for high-resolution lunar and solar imaging. It's also an excellent choice for use as an all-sky vewing or live-view camera to monitor weather conditions, meteors, and cloud movement.
STARVIS 2
ASI585MC adopts the Latest SONY IMX585 sensor with STARVIS 2 technology. Featuring zero amp glow, lower dark current noise, and 3 times larger full well capacity, this camera is regarded as an upgrade of ASI485MC. It is also more sensitive to red, green and near infrared (NIR) lights compared to ASI485MC, especially in >850nm wavelength range, its light sensitivity is 1.5x greater than ASI485MC.

Upgraded Design
With significant enhancements over the ASI485MC—including better sensitivity, larger full well capacity, and support for higher resolutions—the ASI585MC is a vast improvement for astrophotographers wanting clean, high-detail planetary and sky views without the drawbacks of amp glow or limited dynamic range.

Large Full Well Depth & Low Read Noise
With its back-illuminated sensor and advanced pixel design, the ASI585MC offers exceptionally low readout noise and a high full well capacity. This makes it particularly effective in low-light conditions, capturing sharp, detailed images of faint celestial targets.
Optimised Camera Performance
The camera features a built-in HCG (High Conversion Gain) mode, which activates automatically at a gain setting of 252. This mode significantly reduces readout noise while preserving a wide dynamic range—close to true 12-bit performance. In HCG mode, the readout noise drops to as low as 1.5e⁻, ensuring cleaner images even at high gain settings.

Quick Guide | 1 |
Q1. What is the ZWO ASI585MC used for?
The ZWO ASI585MC is a high-sensitivity colour astronomy camera designed for planetary, lunar, solar, and all-sky imaging. The asi585mc is ideal for capturing high-resolution, real-time footage of celestial targets, including meteor showers and atmospheric conditions.
Q2. How do I achieve the correct backfocus with the ZWO ASI585MC?
The native backfocus of the ZWO-ASI585MC is 17.5mm when using the included M42 adapter. To reach the common 55mm backfocus required by many flatteners or focal reducers, spacers or extension tubes must be added to complete the optical train.
Q3. Is the ZWO ASI585MC suitable for deep-sky imaging?
While the asi 585 excels in planetary and lunar imaging, it is not cooled and therefore not ideal for long-exposure deep-sky imaging. For deep-sky targets, consider ZWO’s cooled camera range like the ASI533MC Pro or ASI2600MC Pro.
Q4. Can I use the ASI585MC as a guide camera?
Although the zwo 585mc is primarily intended for imaging rather than guiding, it can be used as a guide camera for bright stars when paired with an appropriate guide scope. However, monochrome guide cameras like the ASI220MM Mini or 174mm mini offer better sensitivity for autoguiding.
Q5. What software is compatible with the ZWO ASI585MC?
The ZWO ASI585 is compatible with ASIStudio, SharpCap, FireCapture, and most imaging platforms that support ASCOM or ZWO native drivers. The asi585mc works on Windows, macOS, and Linux.
Q6. What cables are required to operate the ZWO ASI585MC?
The ZWO ASI585MC USB 3.0 Colour Astronomy Camera uses the supplied USB 3.0 cable for both power and high-speed data transfer. No separate power cable is needed.
Q7. How do I clean and maintain the ZWO ASI585MC camera?
To keep the asi585 in optimal condition, store it in a dry, dust-free environment. Clean the sensor window using a blower or a sensor-safe cleaning solution with a microfiber cloth. Do not touch the sensor directly.
Q8. Does the ZWO ASI585MC suffer from amp glow?
No, the zwo 585 features zero amp glow technology, even during long exposures. This provides cleaner images and eliminates the need for amp glow removal in post-processing.
Q9. Does this ZWO ASI Cameras work with ASIAIR?
Yes, ASI cameras is fully supported by ASIAIR. You can control cooling (for cooled cameras), gain, offset, exposures, filters (if connected via EFW), and guiding through the ASIAIR mobile app. Be sure to keep ASIAIR firmware and the app itself updated for best compatibility.
Q10. Can the ASI585MC be used for near-infrared (NIR) imaging?
Yes, the ZWO ASI585MC is equipped with Sony’s STARVIS 2 sensor, which offers excellent performance in near-infrared wavelengths, especially beyond 850nm. This makes the asi585mc well-suited for applications requiring NIR sensitivity.
